How Smoothy works
Smoothy makes budgeting, expense management and saving money easy by transforming your bank transactions into a super simple money management system that actually works for you.
Updated 30th Aug 2026
The Smoothy budgeting app provides a quick and easy way to understand where your money has gone, and where it needs to go. You don’t have to manually enter expenses, categorise transactions or know how to create a budget — Smoothy does everything for you.
In the time it takes to make a cup of tea, Smoothy helps you:
- Find all your subscriptions & recurring expenses
- See what’s due before you next get paid
- Know how much to put aside to ensure your bills are covered
- See what you can safely spend
Smoothy also shows you how you’re spending your money and helps you manage debts and saving. Smoothy can help you ‘forecast’ upcoming expenses up to a year in advance. No more nasty surprises and big lumpy bills — we see them coming before you do. Our ‘Slices’ feature calculates how much to put aside each time you get paid to make sure your future self is sorted.
Pricing
Smoothy is free for 30 days, then $12.99 per month. No credit or debit card is required to sign up, and you can cancel at any time through the Smoothy app in one click or by contacting support@smoothyhq.com.
Take part in Smoothy’s customer research programme and you’ll get free access to Smoothy for a whole year!
Smoothy uses ‘bank feeds’ to create a personalised budgeting plan that predicts your expenses. You authorise your bank to share your bank feeds via your mobile banking app. We never ask for, or see your bank logins, and we cannot move or take any money from your accounts. You can revoke (cancel) the bank connection with one click and we will no longer have access to bank feeds.

Getting started
It takes less than 5 minutes to create a Smoothy account and connect your bank feed and then BOOM! Your personalised Smoothy plan is ready.
1. Create Smoothy account
To check out the app and the demo data, you only need to enter your email address and the email verification code. (You’ll be asked to complete further security steps when you’re ready to connect your bank feeds.)
2. Authorise bank feeds
a) Verify your email address with Akahu and choose your bank. (You can connect as many banks as you use to Smoothy, plus many KiwiSaver and financial services too.)
b) Choose which bank accounts you’d like to connect (Smoothy works best when you connect all your accounts and credit cards, but you can always add and remove some later).
c) Follow the steps to authorise the bank feeds through your mobile banking app(s).
3. Tell Smoothy when you get paid
One of the coolest things about Smoothy is how it organises all your costs into time periods that sync with your pay cycle (and other people’s pay cycles if you’re sharing bills with someone else). Enter your pay frequency info and watch the magic happen!
4. Review your recurring bills & services
Smoothy finds all your recurring expenses including subscriptions, utility bills, insurance plans and debt repayments. You’ll see a list of the bills and service providers you pay regularly, if there are any you don’t consider recurring expenses, you can exclude them and they won’t be considered recurring expenses going forward.
Once your transactions have been analysed the first time (it shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes) you’re good to go!
Smoothy is a web app that works on both mobiles and laptops, so you can use it on the move or when doing serious life admin. Save Smoothy to your mobile homescreen for easy return access, or sign in at getsmoothy.com/sign-in. Native iPhone and Android apps with biometrics like Face ID are on the way!
Troubleshooting
Very occasionally there are issues with the bank feeds on the bank’s side, and transactions don’t load or accounts have to be reconnected. Follow the instructions in the app to refresh connections and it should be easily resolved. Any problems, contact support@smoothyhq.com.
