How Smoothy works
Smoothy turns messy, meaningless bank transactions into a super simple system that helps you ‘be good with money’.
Smoothy works on mobiles and laptops, so you can use it on the move or when doing serious life admin.
We use NZ’s official open banking system to get ‘bank feeds’ from your banks and re-organise them into a super simple budgeting and expense management system. It’s free to sign up, no credit card required, and we will never sell or share your data with anyone else without your explicit permission.
Open Banking launched in NZ in December 2025 as part of the new Customer Data Rights legislation — it’s your data, so you get to use it to make your life easier. ANZ, Kiwibank, Westpac, ASB and BNZ are all now live with their open banking connections.
The Smoothy money management system is based on tried and tested techniques like envelope budgeting and forecasting that have always been rather complicated and time consuming for the average human. But with the power of open banking for real-time bank feeds, and our NZ-focused expense prediction engine, we do all the maths so you don’t even have to know how.

How to get set up
It takes less than 5 minutes the first time round to automatically categorise your transactions and then BOOM!
1. Connect your bank accounts
Smoothy uses NZ’s official open banking platform to analyse your bank transactions, supported by ANZ, ASB, BNZ, KiwiBank & Westpac. It’s safe and secure and used by Air New Zealand, Sharesies, Xero, and more. Learn more
2. Review your recurring expenses
Smoothy finds all your subscriptions, phone bills, utilities and more. No transaction categorisation required – our expense prediction engine does the heavy lifting, but you can tweak anything that’s not quite right.
3. Tell Smoothy when you get paid
An optional step – this helps us sync your expenses with your pay day dates so you can see what’s due before you next get paid, and what your recurring costs are each pay cycle.
4. Clarity over your finances!
See what’s coming up, how much you need to put aside each time you get paid, and what you can safely spend. Get on with your life, knowing your future self is sorted.
How about putting your whole life on a subscription?
Our optional ‘Slices’ feature puts your whole life on subscription by predicting your expenses up to 12 months in advance and calculating a regular, even amount to put aside each time you get paid.
This helps you take care of your future self by ensuring your known expenses are covered. Most of it is automated so there’s hardly any set up – but you can also add manual expenses that Smoothy doesn’t know is coming and we’ll help you save for those too.
